In the South Korean city of Hanam (Gyeonggi Province), Sunday morning began with a truly cinematic, yet extremely dangerous, accident. 
An elderly woman driving a sedan managed to break through a large window in the wall of a sports complex at full speed and crash the car straight into a swimming pool.
Eight people were in the water at the time of the accident. By pure chance, the car landed in an unoccupied part of the pool, so none of the swimmers were injured.
Bystanders acted instantly: men in their swimming trunks rushed to the sinking car, pulled the woman out, and a swimming instructor arrived to administer first aid and literally resuscitate her until paramedics arrived.
In addition to the woman at fault, who suffered shock and a few bruises, another woman was injured by flying debris.
When police arrived at the scene, the woman at fault (local media reports she is in her 70s) could only say one thing: "I don't even remember what happened."
Investigators are currently determining whether the cause was a sudden deterioration in health, a technical malfunction of the vehicle, or a common mistake among elderly drivers: misplacing the gas and brake pedals.
In South Korea, this incident has already sparked another wave of debate about whether license renewal rules for elderly drivers should be tightened.
