The labyrinth in Van Dusen's garden: a journey through time and greenery (40 photos)

There are only six true Elizabethan hedge mazes in North America. And one of them is hidden in the heart of Vancouver.





Mysteries that date back to antiquity



Mazes have fascinated mankind since time immemorial. The most famous is the legendary Knossos Labyrinth in Crete, where Theseus fought the Minotaur.

In Northern Europe, they were woven from hedges to confuse evil spirits or symbolically pass through the difficult path of life. And in the Renaissance, labyrinths turned into an aristocratic pastime - the most famous was created by Cardinal Wolsey at Hampton Court.

Vancouver Oasis





Van Dusen's Garden continues the tradition. Its labyrinth, planted in the fall of 1981, is woven from 3,000 pyramidal thuja occidentalis 'Fastigiata'. Over this time, they have turned into a real green quest - living, breathing and a little mysterious.

The garden is named after the local timber merchant and philanthropist Whitford Julian Van Dusen. Today, it is managed by the city authorities and enthusiastic volunteers. The territory is huge - 22 hectares of plants from all over the world, and it is open to visitors all year round except for the Christmas holidays.

For those who don't like to get lost



There is an observation deck next to the labyrinth. Here you can watch other visitors wandering among the greenery - and laugh or... remember the right path.



The brave at heart will definitely be able to feel like Theseus in this green, peaceful and enchanting labyrinth. Only, fortunately, without the Minotaur. But it wouldn't hurt to remember the turns when entering. Just in case.
