A car older than 15 years? No gasoline for you! Ban in Delhi (5 photos)

There is a lot of smog and garbage in Delhi, and do you know how India decided to fight for clean air? You already know by name – it banned cars older than 15 years from filling up with gas in New Delhi.

Everyone switch to bicycles!

The dirtiest city in the world

New Delhi regularly makes it into the ranking of the most polluted cities in the world. And every year it is shrouded in acrid smog. Last year, they even cancelled classes at school because it was dangerous for children to go out and walk to school (in half an hour you could breathe in enough air to faint).

This is not a foggy London morning, this is Delhi

The terrible smog there is not at all because of burning landfills (and India is again the world record holder for garbage towers). But because farms located near the city burn old grass and waste to clear the fields for new plowing. All this adds up together with regular emissions from factories and transport, which at some point makes the air pollution almost fatal.

In autumn, due to low temperatures and weak winds, smog does not reach the city, so in autumn and winter it is even worse here than in the hot summer, when dust and dirt are tried to be beaten down with water spray.

Or should poor traders switch to carts? Why are laws always against the poor?

And how will a ban on refueling help?

Diesel cars older than 10 years and petrol cars older than 15 years are prohibited from driving on Delhi roads, but many of them break the rules. Because a ban will not materialize a new car in a person's possession.

That is why Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa decided to stop selling fuel to old cars. The law officially comes into force on March 31, 2025.

The minister said that "gadgets" will be installed at petrol stations to identify such cars.

Even at a petrol station in India there is a mess, who will understand what kind of car they are filling up

In addition, they decided to plant trees in the no-man's land near Delhi with the help of students. And anti-smog guns will be installed on high-rise buildings and at the Delhi airport.

At the peak of the smog, levels of PM2.5 pollutants, which can enter the bloodstream through the lungs, rose to more than 60 times the World Health Organization's recommended daily maximum. And this measurement was taken after older cars were banned from driving in Delhi.

"Where can I get another car in a month?" asked drivers who were asked about the law

The minister decided that the measure didn't work because no one listened (and that's the honest truth!). But what's to stop the owner of a slapdash car from leaving it on the side of the road and pouring petrol into a canister?
