More Exciting Than Shopping: Tourists Travel To Japan To Remove Snow For Free (3 photos)
A trip on a snow removal machine will cost tourists $1,600. And visitors from southern China, who have never seen snow, are happy to take part in this entertainment.
Some Japanese travel agencies and hotels are taking their tours to the next level by offering foreign guests a unique attraction in the form of snow and the opportunity to remove it.
It is noted that Chinese tourists took advantage of the week-long vacation for the Spring Festival or "New Year" by heading to the "Land of the Rising Sun" to do "snow removal".
For example, the travel agency Tobu Top Tours in Sapporo, located in the Hokkaido prefecture in northern Japan, has introduced a snow removal tour as a local attraction.
Sapporo, home to two million people, is known as one of the snowiest cities in the world, with sub-zero temperatures a third of the year and an average of five meters of snow in the winter.
The agency offers clients the opportunity to ride a specialized snow removal machine and watch the snow removal.
The event costs 250,000 yen, or $1,600 USD, for a group of one to six people, and is available from January to early March.
Several hostels in Hokkaido have also started offering snow removal tours, and Chinese tourists who now prefer adventure over shopping are eager to help out.
However, many Japanese on social media were stunned that such a seemingly labor-intensive job has turned into a lucrative tourism business.
"Whoever came up with this idea in the first place is a genius," one commenter noted.
At the same time, many southern Chinese have hardly seen snow, it is noted. And the experience is refreshing, enjoyable, and can be a good workout.
