There will never be more like them. Volkswagen has released the latest VR6 engine (3 photos)
The biography of the 34-year-old unusual unit is complete. Volkswagen has released the last car in history equipped with a VR6 engine. This was stated by one of the VW representatives, Andreas Schleit. Volkswagen first presented a car with a VR6 back in 1991 at the Geneva Motor Show. In total, they managed to assemble about 1.87 million engines.
Volkswagen initially designed the VR6 configuration for transverse installation on front-wheel drive cars. The combination of V-shaped and in-line layouts made the engine more compact and cheaper to produce than conventional V6s, due to the relatively small angle of the cylinders. The first production models with such an engine were the Passat B3 and Corrado.

Later, Volkswagen used such engines of different volumes and with different numbers of valves on many models, including commercial vehicles and even the compact Beetle. The brand's European lineup lost the VR6 in the 2010s, but, for example, in the US, cars were equipped with such engines until 2023. The large Atlas crossover lost the VR6 during the last restyling: it was equipped with a 3.6-liter engine with 280 horsepower.

The company did not specify which car was the last to receive the iconic engine. According to one version, the biography of the VR6 ended in China. Here, the 2.5-liter unit was equipped, for example, with local versions of the Teramont and Talagon. To replace this engine, Volkswagen is systematically introducing more compact turbocharged engines and hybrid power plants into the engine range.
