Safety for Weaklings: Vintage Photos of a Chairlift from the 50s (27 photos)
Old photos of the chairlift at Snow King Ski Resort in Wyoming have left netizens stunned — or rather, shocked by the complete lack of safety bars. Perhaps it's all about perspective, making the lift appear higher than it actually is, but the sight is truly eerie!
In 1936, the Civilian Conservation Corps built a horse and foot trail to the top of the mountain, which became one of Snow King's first ski runs. The Jackson Hole Ski Club was founded in 1937, and two years later a 4,000-foot chairlift was added.
The first chairlift was installed in 1946, a converted ore car. It had four stations, one for beginners and one for more experienced skiers. It was originally a single-seat lift in the 1940s, but by the late 1950s it had become a two-seat lift. In 1981, the entire lift was replaced.
