Pirangi has become one of the main attractions in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Norte after being recognized by Guinness World Records as the largest cashew tree in the world.

The Piranga cashew tree, growing in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Norte, is considered the largest in the world. It has a circumference of about 500 meters and covers an area of 8,400 m². According to legend, the plant was planted in 1888 by a local fisherman; he lived a long life and died at the age of 93 under the shadow of huge crowns.

Experts believe that Pirangi is actually more than a thousand years old, given its growth patterns. The tree is the size of 70 ordinary plants of this species, and to see the real dimensions of the miracle of nature, you need to get to a special observation deck.

Local guides say that more than 60 thousand cashew fruits are produced here per year, and also meet hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over Brazil and other parts of the world.

Many people wonder why the tree has grown so big? This is likely due to a genetic abnormality that causes the branches to grow sideways rather than upwards. Weight and gravity pull the crowns toward the ground, and when they come into contact with the soil, new roots are born - thus the plant continues to continually grow. Today it is almost impossible to distinguish the main trunk from the grown seedlings.

Pirangi has become a major local attraction after being recognized by Guinness World Records as the largest cashew tree in the world, covering an area of almost 8,500 square meters.

According to the Institute for Sustainability and the Environment, about 300 thousand travelers come here every year. Interestingly, the title of the largest cashew tree may soon be taken over by another local “competitor”, growing on the coast of Piaui and occupying an area of about 8,800 square meters. However, this figure has not yet been officially confirmed by the Guinness Book of Records.
