For the first time in two centuries: an “invasion” of cicadas is expected in the USA (6 photos)
This spring, a cicada "invasion" is expected: for the first time in more than 220 years, two broods of these insects should appear simultaneously. The last time such a phenomenon was observed was only in 1803.
This year, a unique phenomenon will occur in several US states: for the first time since 1803, two broods of cicadas are expected to appear simultaneously - that is, billions. These broods are known by the scientific names XIX and XIII. There are seven species of "periodic" cicadas, including three that appear every 17 years and four that appear every 13 years. Although some species of cicadas emerge every year, periodical cicadas spend most of their lives underground, where they grow and feed—and then emerge to the surface.
"No one alive today will see this phenomenon again. It will happen for the first time in 221 years, and will not happen again until 2245. Under the right circumstances and with the right number of individuals interbreeding, it becomes possible to create a new brood for a new cycle. This is a unique event " said entomologist Floyd W. Shockley.
The "invasion" is expected in late April-early May: they usually emerge when the soil temperature reaches approximately 17.8°C. A well-known sign of the start of "cicada season" is the noise made by males - a loud buzzing noise that is primarily used to attract mates. The US states of Illinois and Indiana are where most cicadas are expected to be seen.
