A man opens a jammed airplane landing gear on a moving car.
In this incident, which occurred in 1985, a Piper PA-28 encountered technical difficulties during takeoff. The plane's landing gear did not fully retract and the pilot was forced to make an emergency landing on the runway.
The plane was traveling at about 60 miles per hour when a man, identified as Richard Smith, climbed out and began trying to open the landing gear. Smith, who was a certified mechanic, was able to open the landing gear and the plane landed safely.
The incident was considered a heroic act and Smith was awarded a medal for bravery.
