Dinosaur voices and unexpected ways to demonstrate them (9 photos + 7 videos)
Giant lizards – greetings from the depths of antiquity. And if it turned out to be quite plausible to recreate their appearance from the preserved remains, then problems arose with other things. In particular, with the voice.
But dinosaurs formed an entire subculture, one of the milestones of which was the film “Jurassic Park.” And in order to give the characters a voice, his sound designer Gary Rydstrom had to do serious and at the same time creative work. After all, the viewer had to be convinced that dinosaurs are the most real.

And he approached the solution of the problem with all responsibility. He was not satisfied with all the data available in the database. And for the end result, Gary received two Oscars for sound design and sound mixing.
Gallimimus
A rushing flock of Gallimimus is very reminiscent of a herd of horses. And for good reason: to voice this look, Gary used the sound that a mare in heat made when it smelled a stallion. The sound designer was right; the sound turned out outstanding, because during the mating period many animals sound, let’s say, unusual.

Brachiosaurus
The singing of the brachiosaurus, according to Gary, was one of the most touching and bewitching. Despite the fact that he used a donkey's bray as a basis. There is one peculiarity in the sound production of these ungulates - a sharp change in pitch. And if you slow down the vocalization, you will get quite song-like vocals, reminiscent of hooting.

Velociraptors
The peak of originality in the scoring of this species was the use of the sound of turtles indulging in love. The process is specific and long, so the specialist had to spend a lot of time stocking up on material. However, this is Hollywood, and there is no place without sex. Therefore, everything is quite predictable, although funny.
In addition to armored animals, when voicing the predator, Rydstrom used the snoring of a horse and the hiss of an angry goose. As you know, the sound of this bird is not the most melodic sound in the world, but it turned out to be on topic.

Triceratops
The voice base of this dinosaur is the cows from Skywalker Ranch. But to simulate the heavy breathing of a sick Triceratops, the sound engineer used a single artificial sound. He took a cardboard tube with a spring inside and breathed into it, providing a reverberation effect - a decrease in the intensity of sound when it is reflected multiple times.

Dilophosaurus
Unexpectedly, the voice of one of the most romantic birds - the swan - was used to voice this horror with a hood. In its normal state, it made a cute hooting sound, and when it inflated its hood and prepared to attack, it sounded a duet formed from the hiss of a rattlesnake and the hoarse squawk of a hawk.

kids
To voice the newly hatched dinosaurs, the sounds of a variety of babies were used - fox cubs, owls and others, whose voices have a specific hoarseness.

And finally, one of the most impressive characters in the film, striking in its power and greatness, found its voice thanks to Rydstrom’s dog, the baby Jack Russell terrier Buster. And for the loud roar, the voice of a baby elephant was used. Unlike an adult animal, it sounds quieter and slower, so it was ideal for the voice of a formidable giant.
