What it's like to sneeze 12,000 times a day (3 photos + 1 video)
Texas resident Katelyn Thornley suffers from an incredibly rare disease. She sneezes 20 times per minute, which is 12,000 times a day. The problem is that this condition has plagued her since she was 12 years old, and doctors have never figured out the cause.
Here is an old video from 2015 about Katelyn, then she was still a 12-year-old schoolgirl.
Poor Katelyn Thornley is constantly reaching for a tissue because she keeps sneezing and just can't stop. She says this strange disease is surprisingly painful because her body is constantly in a state of readiness for the next "apchhi" - even at night, as she continues to sneeze in her sleep.
It all started suddenly when the girl was walking from a clarinet lesson at her school. According to Catelyn, at first it was “like little tremors.” She thought it might be an allergic reaction to something or an irritation in the nose and would stop soon. But this never happened. On the contrary, it only got worse - and she began to sneeze up to 20 times a minute.
In the following weeks, the sneezing attacks began to last up to 15 minutes at a time, and Catelyn could barely finish a sentence when she began to speak. As a result, she had to stop attending school and give up playing clarinet in the orchestra. The girl couldn’t even eat normally, and there could be problems with drinking. Her constant sneezing affected every aspect of her life.
Doctors from Texas Children's Hospital in Houston tried to understand the mysterious sneezing situation and find out what caused it, but were very puzzled by the unique case. According to Dr. Mered Parnes, Katelyn had what she described as a "weird sensation" in her nose, which is very common with tics.
In September 2015, when her story became public, Katelyn saw six doctors who ruled out an allergy. They also ruled out the presence of a virus. Catelyn and her parents are at an impasse.
Her parents became increasingly concerned about their daughter's incessant sneezing and its mysterious cause. The girl's father recalled a time when Katelyn had an attack that lasted 45 minutes straight. But they did not lose hope that someone would show up and provide answers to questions about Catelyn's condition.
The girl calmed down only when she finally fell asleep - and in order to relax, she had to take sleeping pills and listen to The Beatles. “Sometimes I want to leave my body for a while to watch myself sleep,” she admitted. “Because even in my sleep I sneeze.”
Despite the fact that eight years have passed, there has been no official news about Catelyn's sneezing habit. Let's hope she doesn't have to buy tissues in bulk anymore.
