Kate Winslet recalled her first impressions of Leonardo DiCaprio on the set of Titanic (18 photos)
"You know, when you think about it, in the world we live in now, to have a friendship that connects you and a shared history is really something," Kate Winslet says of Titanic co-star and best friend Leonardo DiCaprio.
It seems their friendship is only getting stronger over the years.
Having met on the set of Titanic in the 90s, Kate and Leo quickly became friends.
Cheering each other on at film awards and singing each other's praises in interviews, they became one of Hollywood's most beloved duos.
They're so close that Leo walked Kate down the aisle at her wedding to Edward Abel Smith in 2012
And now, 25 years after the release of the film that connected them for life, Kate recalls her first impressions of her Titanic colleague.
"As soon as I started working with Leo, we found our own rhythm," the Oscar winner says in a new behind-the-scenes clip from the upcoming 3D 4K HDR release of Titanic.
Leo, 21, seemed “lanky, thin, with uncoordinated limbs,” but they “immediately became close.”
"He felt very free and had this sparkling energy that was magnetic. And I remember thinking, 'Oh, this is going to be fun.' We'll definitely get along. And we really hit it off."
Kate talks admiringly of how Leo was fascinated by the filming, obsessing over everything from the details of the liner to the class divide.
"He was very, very smart, very, very curious. He and I connected on many levels. It was that sense of focus on the craft that still excites him to this day."
At the end of the video, the actress says that their friendship has lasted for many years, and they often call each other.
"We call each other and talk. It's not like, 'Wait, I'll call you tomorrow.' You know, if you think about it, in the world we live in now, to have a friendship that connects you and a shared history is really something."
Many fans believe that the reason Leo hasn't settled down yet is because Kate is actually "the one" for him.
Despite jokes about their very close relationship, the friends never crossed the line. Kate told Rolling Stone in 1998 that a romance between them would be "like incest."
"I think the secret of our friendship is that we never had romantic feelings for each other. People are so upset to hear that because in the soap opera we fell in love at first sight and had a million kisses."
Leo, who is private about his personal life, gushed about Kate in a 2010 conversation with Esquire, calling her one of his “dearest friends.”
"We trust each other completely," he said.
