San Mateo police and firefighters arrived in a quiet California neighborhood just after 8 a.m. on November 17th. The 70-year-old Tesla owner lost control, causing the car to fly across the yard and pool and demolish the kitchen wall.
Fortunately, neither the driver nor her 40-year-old daughter, who was in the passenger seat, were injured. The house was also empty at that moment.
"Obviously, accidents like this don't happen every day, so we had multiple officers on scene to make sure no one was hurt," said Jeramie Surratt, the department's public information officer.
Meredith Donato, whose family has lived in the house for 25 years, was glad her mother was not home at the time of the accident.
“Honestly, it’s amazing that no one was hurt... If my mom was at home, she would definitely be drinking tea in the kitchen at 7 o’clock in the morning,” Donato said in an interview. “Of course, there is property damage, but in the end they're just things."
According to the police, the Tesla car demolished the fence and flew at a height of 12-15 meters above the yard, crashed into two parked cars, and then landed in a house.
At the time of the incident, the car was moving down a hill and was not in autonomous driving mode.
"Witnesses saw the Tesla slow to a stop and accelerate very quickly, but what exactly happened remains to be seen," Surratt added.
