Residents of a British village take up arms against visitors from the capital (8 photos)

London resident Rebecca Tidy bought a house in a seaside village in Cornwall. She expected her neighbors to welcome her with open arms. Unfortunately, they had other plans.

Rebecca Tidy bought a house in St Mawes, Cornwall, but the locals didn't welcome her with open arms.

A 35-year-old British woman lives in the capital; she needed a rustic cottage as a long-term investment to rent it out to vacationers.

Thanks to rental income, a single mother can afford to pay the mortgage on her London home.

However, villagers began to complain that housing prices were rising because of it.

She purchased a "dilapidated, abandoned" house and renovated it to rent it out to vacationers.

“One terrible man shouted at me in the store when he heard me asking for oat milk. He told me to ‘get off to London if I want this posh s**t.’ He also said that I was raising house prices , renovating a house in the village,” Tidy complained.

The neighbors started calling her arrogant and telling her to go back to London.

“My coldness is explained by the fact that I’m tired to death of defending my interests in front of local residents who constantly whine about the fact that “outsiders” are buying houses,” the woman explains.

This hostility, in her opinion, is due to prejudice against Londoners.

"A lot of people in Cornwall jump to the conclusion that everyone who owns two houses is rich. But I'm not one of them, I'm just a hard worker."

During the pandemic, Rebecca found time to renovate the cottage, which included removing the outdated kitchen and bathroom

She plastered the walls, repaired the wooden windows, and dismantled the old kitchen and bathroom herself.

The London house where Rebecca lives with her daughter also requires renovation. She chose to invest in a cottage to obtain an additional source of income.

“I renovated my house, although I don’t have money to renovate the home where I live with my child.”

A London resident believes that those who point fingers at her do not know how much work she has put into acquiring property.

"They criticize me, ignoring the fact that they could buy the property themselves and renovate it," Tidy says.

Single mother uses rent money to pay off mortgage

In addition, many Cornish residents make money from tourists visiting the famous beaches during the peak holiday season.

Tidy concluded: "Visitors are seen as a cash cow. Locals pump us out of exorbitant amounts of money, whether it's for renovation work or £19-a-portion fish and chips."
