Aquagel - a miracle baby who lived under water for more than an hour (5 photos)
It is rare that a person is able to survive under water for more than 5 minutes. After this time, oxygen starvation sets in and death. But there was one unusual case in history that refuted everything standards.
It was in 1986. Baby Michelle Funk just turned 1 two years. On a hot July day, she and her older brother played on the shore creek near Salt Lake City. The children had fun throwing into the water pebbles. And suddenly in a shallow stream in a second a giant bubble: probably a snow dam broke somewhere in the mountains. Michelle was closer to the stream, she was immediately picked up by water and carried away.

The brother rushed to call the adults. The frightened mother rushed to creek and for about 10 minutes rummaged along the bottom, not noticing the icy water. After all, a woman icy horror bound her - her baby was in danger.
Rescuers responded quickly: 10 minutes after the call they were already on the shore and had set up a dam upstream. When the water level began to fall, they noticed a nursery near a giant boulder handle.
Almost an hour had passed since the fall into the water. The girl was blue and cold. Pulse and respiration were absent. But the rescuers began to carry out resuscitation, and a child who has become recovering heartbeat, was taken to the nearest hospital.

By some amazing coincidence, this Dr. Bolt worked in the hospital. The medic experimented with a new apparatus that raised the temperature of the blood of patients, passing it through yourself. There was no experience of testing on children, but in the case of Michelle every chance had to be seized.
Although the chances of returning to life were negligible, doctors decided to take a chance. Two important factors contributed to this: good for such a situation, blood tests and the absence of visible injuries. Doctors warned relatives that there was a possibility of brain damage. That there is a girl's opportunities will be limited, even if she survives. Perhaps she will even remain a severe invalid.
Nothing happened for the first half hour. Then the pupils Michelle began to react to the light. There was a weak pulse. In one hour the child was disconnected from the apparatus and transferred to the intensive care unit therapy. For a few more days, the baby was in a borderline condition. She could have been killed by pneumonia or some other complication. Everything was incomprehensible and state of the brain. Two weeks later, she smiled for the first time when she saw parents. She said her first word a week later.
Two months later, Michelle is almost completely recovered. A reminder of an hour spent under ice water was mild hand tremors, blurred vision and problems with coordination. But everything this does not prevent a woman from living a full life, playing sports and work.

Doctors considered that the main factors contributed to the miraculous salvation, became the cold that immersed the body into a state similar to suspended animation, and a spasm of the larynx, due to which the girl did not choke.
Michelle's case was a record one (66 minutes underwater) and demonstrated that the human body is amazing and, despite advances in medicine, is still full of surprises and mysteries.
