A fortune spilled out of a motorcyclist's backpack onto a busy highway
John Mark Barrientos, an e-wallet top-up kiosk worker, remembered July 4th for the rest of his life when he decided to transport more than 2,800,000 Philippine pesos ($50,500) on a motorcycle in an ordinary backpack along a busy highway in Cebu.
According to media reports, the zipper of the backpack unfastened and thousands of bills flew out onto the pavement. Eyewitnesses of such unheard-of "generosity" abandoned vehicles to replenish their budgets with banknotes scattered in different directions.
The police officers who arrived at the scene of the incident helped the young man to return part of the stolen money. After the count, law enforcement officers turned to local residents on radio and television and demanded the return of the missing million pesos, threatening legal proceedings.
