This story began in 2020, when in the parks of the German the cities of Ober-Mörlen began to find packages with mutilated carcasses hedgehogs.
After some time, it turned out that this was the work of a 36-year-old unemployed man who, according to the judge, "built a torture chamber for hedgehogs." He caught hedgehogs, beat them, broke their paws, starved - scoffed as best he could, and then threw the mutilated corpses into the park.
The police got on the trail of the hedgehog killer only when they discovered a pair of used socks in a bag of dead hedgehogs. In the end she found the location on a DNA trail and searched the suspect's apartment. IN during the search, mutilated rabbits and a couple of cats were also found.
The man was checked by psychiatrists and issued a conclusion - a completely sane person with sadistic inclinations.
Last July, the Friedberg District Court pronounced the verdict: two years and ten months in prison for killing 32 hedgehogs, 4 rabbits and 2 cats, but the defendant did not agree with such a term and demanded review the verdict. In mid-January 2023, the case was reviewed again times and the verdict was upheld.
In Germany, hedgehogs are a protected species. For capture, injury and killing hedgehogs or damaging/destroying their nests can be obtained fine up to 50,000 euros
