Ferrari 246 Dino GTS 1974, owned by a socialite who was later buried in another Ferrari (16 photos)
This 1974 Ferrari 246 Dino GTS from Scaglietti, one of three in Verde Medio Nijinsky, formerly owned by Hollywood socialite Sandra West and is equipped with factory air conditioning and electric windows.
Strictly speaking, this is not a Ferrari. Not found on the body of the car images of Cavallino Rampante (translated from Italian - Prancing stallion), the word Ferrari can only be found on one of the markings. labels (picture below). The fact is that Enzo Ferrari for many years did not recognized engines with fewer than twelve cylinders, and his son Alfredo ("Dino"), who unfortunately died in 1956 at the age of 24 years, passionately engaged in the development of a 6-cylinder engine to participate in Junior Formulas.
Later, the old Ferrari, under pressure from the management of the Italian "stable" and other interested parties gave the go-ahead for the production of cars with "small" motors, incl. and for civilian consumers under a separate brand named after the departed son - Dino. It was not an easy matter had to work closely with the Fiat concern, but in the end beautiful small "almost" Ferraris were extremely in demand.
Enzo Ferrari was also embarrassed by the Dino project because it was a mid-engine (the motor is located behind the backs of the driver and passenger), and then no one produced cars of this kind for civilian circulation (Lamborghini Miura appeared in 1966). Old Enzo rightly considered such a scheme extremely dangerous for untrained drivers and was afraid to take on responsibility for possible victims. But in 1968 the mid-engined Dino 206 GT (from which "our" 246 GTS subsequently grew) after all debuted!
This Dino has a 2.4-liter six-cylinder engine with 175 Horse power. This is the American version, smothered to please environmental standards, while in Europe the motor developed 195 horsepower forces. The European version accelerated to 100 km / h in 7.1 seconds, developing a maximum speed of 238 km / h.
Motor in the middle!
Front spare...
... and in the back - a place for luggage
So what does the funeral and another Ferrari have to do with it?! The point is that this the car belonged to a certain socialite Sandra West. The lady was married to an oil tycoon, which allowed her to enjoy countless number of luxury items, including Ferrari cars. Sandra led an extremely busy lifestyle, especially when she was widowed, revolved in Hollywood high society, abused drugs and other drugs, sometimes ousting movie stars from the tabloids. In 1977, not having lived to the age of 40, she died, bequeathing to bury herself ... in her beloved Ferrari car. A very extravagant desire!
According to various sources, it was a Ferrari 250 GT or a Ferrari 330 America. On the more than 300 people attended the funeral, mostly curious the public, who watched with interest the burial of a box measuring 6 x 3 x 2.75 meters, which was poured from above with concrete so that no one had temptation to loot.
Burial in a car is, of course, not a unique event, but interesting. In the city of Tulsa, Oklahoma, in general, capsules are laid time with cars...
Sandra's Dino is one of only three made in this colour, with factory options in the form of air conditioning and power windows, apparently, he was not very fond of the hostess, which in this case is even good. The car is on the ground, not under it;)
There are such "not Ferrari" today more than half a million dollars!
