The mystery of an abandoned and fish-infested shopping center (4 photos)

2 November 2017

In the old part of Bangkok, the abandoned New World shopping center is well hidden from view. It was built in the 1990s, originally as an 11-story building. Did the creators think that in 20 years only fish would be “traded” there?

The top seven floors were demolished back in 1996, writes Taste of The Road. In 1997, the remaining four floors survived a severe fire, allegedly started by competitors. People died.

After this, the center was abandoned; deprived of a roof, it began to fill with rainwater (this still happens in tropical Thailand), which no one pumped out.

At some point already in the 2000s, for some unknown reason, fish appeared in the water in the shopping center - exotic species of koi carp and catfish. As a result, there were an unimaginable number of them.

Locals are reluctant to tell strangers about this hidden gem of Bangkok, and government officials even outright prohibit visiting the site of the former shopping center. One can only guess where local establishments get their fish from...
