The other day, the Internet was captivated by a photograph of a red, curly-haired kitten that appeared on social networks. Cat lovers were amazed by the animal's curly fur, declaring that they had never seen anything like it. Meanwhile, this kitten is not unique, but a representative of a wonderful breed - the Selkirk Rex, which has a very interesting history...
This curly-haired Selkirk Rex kitten has taken the internet by storm. He's really handsome, but that's not all he has going for him. As it turned out, his breed has a very interesting history.
The history of the Selkirk Rex breed dates back to a single cat named Miss Pesto, who was born at an animal shelter in Montana in 1987.
Miss Pesto had four siblings, but they all had straight hair.
Soon Miss Pesto was adopted from the shelter by a cat breeder. Realizing that curly fur in cats is a dominant trait, she decided to breed such unusual animals.
Miss Pesto was crossed with a black Persian cat and they produced six kittens, all with curly fur. The breeder named the breed "Selkirk Rex" after her stepfather. So almost 30 years ago a new breed of cats was born.
Selkirk Rexes are real charmers! This breed is far from common in the world, and this is probably why the photo of the red, curly kitten caused such a strong response on the Internet. Perhaps the unexpected popularity will help the Selkirk Rex become more famous and more numerous - after all, many, fascinated by the photo of the kitten, now dream of their own Selkirk!
